The Lower Saxony State Institute for Quality Development in Schools (NLQ) has about 140 full-time members of staff who have been working successfully for more than 25 years.
NLQ initiates and supports processes of quality development at schools and in the education system in Lower Saxony by

  • developing curricula, guidelines and evaluating schoolbooks
  • state-wide coordination, evaluation and documentation of pilot schemes
  • offering further education for teachers
  • European and international projects in education
  • developing and establishing competencies in school and quality management
  • school inspection

Since 2007 with the implementation of the so-called "autonomous schools", highest priority has been given to the qualification of school leaders. At the moment, 1,800 school heads and 1,200 teachers are receiving further education towards their future school leader functions. A third of the annual budget is spent on such qualification measures.
For more than 10 years now, the project group European and International Affairs at the NLQ has been coordinating and operating the European and international education collaboration of Lower Saxony.
